Playground Games

School playground games have changed somewhat over the years, often reflecting the changes in our society. Still playground games are meant to allow the kids the chance to get away from the business of education, even as the children’s playground games still provide opportunities to learn basic social skills and etiquette. Here are some of the lessons learned from effective outdoor playground games.

Learning playground game rules actually teaches a great deal. The rules that govern children playground games in most schools are intended to be inclusive of every student, sending the message that all people have a place in society. The rules of playground games also help to teach there are basic social standards that are expected of all persons, such as refraining from taking things that do not belong to us. Whether the childrens playground games are intended for a small group or for large group playground games, the social cues are still there and in time will set the expectations of all the kids on the playground.

Some playground games require some preparation before you can play, such as pain on playground games, such as baseball. Preparing the playground for the event teaches kids that sometimes you have to get ready before you can participate, a lesson that all adults have to learn before they can train for a career or successfully make a major purchase. Elementary playground game rules that teach the necessity of preparation before play help to turn out adults who understand hard work is required before you get anywhere.

Even playground games for K3 kids help lay the foundation for learning experiences later on. This age group often loves word games or games that require them to expand their vocabulary. Even old fashioned playground games such as Red Rover and Simon Says require that kids begin to develop strong control of words, including the understanding of their meanings.

Children’s playground games are a wonderful way for kids to let off some steam, but they are also invaluable when it comes to helping children understand social norms and what is expected of them, as well as teaching them some life lessons that will serve them well throughout their lives. In an age when some schools are eliminating playground games, there is a need to re-examine all the wonderful things that kids learn from those simple playground games, and think of what they will lose if the game time is taken away. In the meantime, maybe all of us should play a round of Simon Says, just to refresh our memories.
