If you are serious about entertaining this summer, and if you are entertaining it is best to take your guests’ comfort seriously, then you need to consider all of the actors that will contribute to your guests’ comfort. Sure, you think about, put a lot of thought into, the food and drinks. Maybe you put a lot of thought into the music. However, if you are going to ask people to be outdoors you also need to give them shelter (cue the Rolling Stones – hey you are thinking about music too, yes?

Give Them Shelter

Yes, summer is about being outside, out of the overly sheltered confines of house and office. But outside also means bug, mosquitoes, ants, wind, chance of rain, chance of really a lot of mosquitoes, too much sun, and more hazards or just plain irritants to your guests’ happiness. Shelter is needed to protect people from all of the irritants of summer, even if it is only an option. You need to give your guests shelter. Yes, maybe they will be perfectly happy out in the elements, but maybe not. Providing a simple shelter is part of being a good host.

The Types Of Shelter To Choose From

There is a range of good shelter ideas from which you can choose. These range from simple temporary shelters to expensive permanent shelters. Some more inexpensive shelters incude a simple canopy, a canvas top over three polls. A more elaborate party canopy take up a wider space, fitting dozens of people under its ceiling and may even have canvas or plastic walls. There are simple setup canopies under names like pop up canopy, and ez up canopy. Larger party tents may be called pavilions because they seat so many under them. You may have seen these at some wedding receptions or major events like golf tournaments. These cannot easily be permanent shelter in your back yard, unless you have a significantly large back yard. A more permanent shelter would have wooden walls, maybe even concrete walls. A back yard shelter with solid permanent walls is usually referred to as a gazebo. A gazebo usually has screens for windows so air flows through the gazebo shelter but keeps out insects such as mosquitos and biting flies. All of these various types of shelter come in a variety of styles and colors and materials. If you can, provide a variety of choices to your guests so that they can enjoy the summer party you are putting on.
